CAN WE PLANT ENOUGH TREES TO SAVE US FROM A WARMING PLANET?

Series Two of Wood for the Trees takes a closer look at the issues raised in our short films about the future of UK forests.

Can we plant enough trees to save us from a warming planet?

Determined to understand the future of English woodlands, Tom and Charly continue their quest to ask awkward questions and share their learning. This film asks if it's possible to plant enough trees in the UK to sequester our carbon emissions. With animations from Robin Lane Roberts that make the math’s look beautiful. WINNER OF THE 2023 CLIMATES - BEST DIRECTOR

REWILDING THE TREESCAPE

In 2021 we met Alastair Driver of Rewilding Britain at the Knepp Estate to find out how trees fit into the Rewilding process. Are all of the trees in a rewilding project naturally regenerated or is there space for tree planting? Does management happen on a rewilding project?  Alastair answers these question and others thoughtfully and thoroughly.

SMALLWOODLANDS - CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

In part six of Woodforthetrees, Doug King-Smith talks about the challenges and rewards of managing The Hillyfield Woodland Farm on Dartmoor. Introduced by Tom Barnes.

A BETTER FUTURE FOR OUR WOODLANDS

12 ideas to help British forests grow.

In 2019 there was a lot of talk about how tree planting could solve many of the environmental problems we are facing. We wanted to explore the issues around this by starting a series of interviews with woodland experts from different perspectives and backgrounds. We called the series Wood for the Trees and asked our guests about their hopes and fears for the future of British forests. We asked every participant to tell us what one policy suggestion they would give to the UK government. This short film presents those ideas and suggestions.

LIVING ASH PROJECT - REPORT A TREE

A DEFRA funded film for the Living Ash Project.  The Living Ash Project aims to identify a large and diverse number of ash trees with good tolerance to ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus.), to secure this material for further breeding work, and to quickly make this material available to industry.  Dr Jo Clark, Head of Research at Future Trees Trust explains the process for landowners and woodland owners to identify tolerant ash trees within a woodland setting. Writer, Camera work, Editor.

FROM HARM TO HARMONDY - STOP ECOCIDE

A film to support the work of the late lawyer Polly Higgins’ - Stop Ecocide Campaign. A campaign to create an international law that will make individuals of countries and companies committing ecocide - the mass destruction of ecosystems - criminally responsible. This film looked at the role of Indigenous People on the frontline of this issue as they fight for the protection of their land from loggers and mining companies and the toxic pollution that this extraction creates. Screened in The Hague during the 2019 meeting of the International Criminal Court, the Eighteenth Session of the Assembly of the States Parties.
